My mental wellbeing has been a long time in the making.
Lived experiences with addiction, depression and imposter syndrome all contributed to who I am today. The textbooks came later to help me make sense of the challenges I experienced on my journey. I was always fascinated by psychology; I’ve been lucky enough to experience and learn from it.
I’ve spent my career in shipping, both dry bulk and tankers, at Owners, Brokers and a Trading Company.
In my 37 years’ experience in operations, commercial and projects I have worked in London, Houston, Los Angeles, Seoul and Singapore experiencing different cultures, reactions and challenges. Through it all, I wanted my customers to know that I was there for them. My addictive personality meant I wasn’t always there for myself, often leading to anxiety and some deep depression. Now as a fully qualified mental health counsellor I'm ready to give back to the maritime industry.
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
We need to recognise we are not always equipped to respond to negativity.
Most of us are able to eat healthy and workout for a fit body, but what about mental wellbeing?
We should all have the same opportunity and resources to deal with dark thoughts and negative emotions that hold us back from our true potential, and from building our support networks.
Music is important in my life, I found meaning in music when I was unable to embrace my own emotions and behaviours. In my blog, which I talk about my own life and challenges as well as maritime in general, I try to relate the content to music that meant something to me during episodes of my life.
